To show this diverse group of people that they are not only entering a world of excellent science but also a region full of wonderful nature and culture, we invited the participants to Lake Kemnade, located near the Ruhr-University Bochum. The onboarding event helps the international participants get to know each other and build essential contacts in our Cluster of Excellence.
For the 23 participants, pedal boats were rented, and scientific games were played.
In the end, students had dinner at a German restaurant, where we discussed the challenges that arise when studying or working abroad for the first time. We shared information and tips on the first steps in a new country, such as documents and some unwritten rules for living in Germany. Helping international students to settle into a new environment and build a strong network helps them to excel in their studies.
