GSS Summer School 2015

The second GSS Summer School took place from 25th to 29th of May 2015. We had the pleasure to welcome 12 international participants from five different countries and more than 80 participants in total.

The second Summer School Solvation Science was held from 25.-29.05.2015 at the Ruhr-University Bochum and RESOLV’s participating institutes. The second GSS Summer School comprised again two main parts: two days of experimental or theoretical hands-on courses and two days of plenary lectures.

The Summer School started with a welcome reception on Monday evening in Bochums famous pub area “Bermuda Dreieck”. On Tuesday and Wednesday 30 hands-on courses (Advanced Modules) took places at RUB, TU Dortmund, MPI for iron research in Düsseldorf, MPI for coal research in Mülheim and Fraunhofer UMSICHT in Oberhausen. The participants got the chance to learn about the latest experimental and theoretical techniques in the area of Solvation Science in small groups of 2-6 people each.

The Advanced Modules were followed by the lecture program of the Summer School on Thursday 28th and Friday 29th May, which focused on four main topics: molecular dynamics simulations, THz spectroscopy, electrochemistry and organic catalysis. Half a day was dedicated to each of these topics that have been chosen by the GSS members themselves. Each topics session started with an introductory talk by a speaker from RESOLV or the local institutes that was followed by two keynote lectures of internationally well-know speakers in the area of Solvation Science. Please see here for an overview of the program.

We had the pleasure to welcome 12 international guests from USA, India, Italy, UK, and Germany at the Summer School and 80 people participated in the event in total. The social program started with the welcome reception on Monday was continued by a guided tour through Bochum city center on Tuesday. One highlight of the lectures program and a point of the social program, as well, was an entertaining lecture by Klaus Roth, a famous author of public outreach books on chemistry. The Summer School ended with a barbecue on Friday, where the students and the speakers got together in a relaxing atmosphere and the continued their lively discussions until late night.
