It is almost impossible to observe the movement of nuclei inside molecules – but it is possible to calculate it. Dr. Lukasz Walewski from the Cluster of Excellence RESOLV (Ruhr Explores Solvation) at Ruhr-Universität got an insight into the behaviour of hydrogen nuclei at very low temperatures. These hydrogen nuclei involved in so-called hydrogen bonds ensure, for example, that water is liquid (and not solid or gaseous) at room temperature. For his research, he was awarded the Longuet-Higgins Young Author’s Prize by the international scientific journal “Molecular Physics”.
